Our goal is not to imprison political figures or activists: Obaidul Quader

Date:

Obaidul Quader, the minister of road transportation and bridges and general secretary of the Awami League, stated that the miscreants need to be punished for the benefit of the country and the public and that they have no intention of imprisoning political figures and activists.

On Saturday, the 125th birthday of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Obaidul Quader spoke with journalists after paying respects to the poet by laying wreaths at his grave next to Dhaka University’s major mosque.

“Those who are involved in torturing journalists, attacking the police hospital and chief justice’s residence, and beating police and Ansar to death in broad daylight are not political leaders and activists,” the speaker declared. The interests of the public and the country demand that these criminals be brought to justice.

“We have no agenda to send political leaders and activists to jail, but those who carry out arson and arms trading face cases based on the merit of their crimes, and jailed accordingly,” Obaidul Quader stated in response to a question from the media.

He stated of poet Nazrul Islam, “Poet Nazrul Islam served as an inspiration for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Bengali liberation movement.” We honor Nazrul, who Bangabandhu brought to Bangladesh after the country gained its independence.
