The court directs the ex-IGP Benazir’s movable and immovable assets to be seized

Date:

Benazir Ahmed, a former inspector general of police (IGP), has ordered the confiscation of all of his moveable and immovable assets, as well as 83 purchase papers, by a court in Dhaka.

Ash Shams Jaglul Hossain, a senior special metropolitan judge in Dhaka, issued the decision on Thursday, according to Khurshid Alam, an attorney with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), who verified the information to Prothom Alo.

The decision was made in opposition to an ACC appeal that asked for the seizure of assets owned by the late IGP Benazir and his relatives in order to look into claims that they had accumulated unlawful wealth.

According to the lawyer, they were asking for an order to take possession of the former IGP’s Gopalganj land, bank accounts, and family members.

On March 31, a national newspaper called Kaler Kantho released in-depth articles about the former IGP’s illicit acquisition of wealth. A few other media sites also carried some follow-up reporting on the same subject.

A story named “Aladdin’s lamp in Benazir’s house” revealed an eco-resort constructed on roughly 1,400 bighas of property that belonged to the family of Benazir Ahmed. It also stated shares in a five-star hotel, 800 bighas of additional land acquired next to the resort, and a spacious apartment in the Bashundhara neighborhood of the capital.

ACC attorney Khorsheda Yasmin informed the media during a press briefing on April 23 that the commission has started legal proceedings in response to the reported charges.
