Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal, the first secretary of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), has had his immovable and moveable assets seized by a Dhaka court.
The decision was made on Thursday by Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of the Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge’s court in response to an appeal that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had submitted.
A flat, two plots, and savings certificates worth Tk 25.5 million owned by Faisal, his wife, and other family members are among the confiscated assets.
The ACC’s public prosecutor, Mosharraf Hossain Kajal, informed Prothom Alo that the NBR officer had amassed a substantial fortune via corruption and bribery, and that the ACC was currently looking into this.
He added that the ACC briefed the court in this respect and requested a confiscation order after discovering the flat, two plots, and savings certificates valued at Tk 25.5 million during the initial investigation.
Written notice was provided to the court by the ACC stating that Abu Mahmud Faisal had accumulated his money through bribery and abuse of power. In an effort to hide the origins of his money, he had opened over 700 accounts in his relatives’ names.
