Sheikh Hasina has resigned as prime minister in response to the government’s one-point demand to leave the “Students against Discrimination” platform.
She departed in a military helicopter at 2:30 PM on Monday after quitting. Sheikh Rehana, her sister, was with her. It is said that the helicopter took off for India.
On January 11 of this year, Sheikh Hasina, the president of the Awami League, took the oath of office as prime minister for the fourth time in her career. She had previously held the position of prime minister through the 1996 seventh national election.
In 2008, Sheikh Hasina retained her position as prime minister after being victorious in the ninth national election held under the caretaker government supported by the military. Then, the opposition parties abstained from the tenth national election, which was biased.
There is also discussion over the 2018 eleventh national election. Voter stuffing was widely said to have occurred the night before this election. The “night election” was the moniker given to this election.
And in January of this year, she was re-elected as prime minister following the twelfth national election. But this election is contentious as well. This election also saw no participation from the opposition.
The leaders of their own party were set up as independent candidates in a “dummy” contest. This election was dubbed a “dummy election” by the opposition. She resigned and fled the nation in a chopper after just six months in office in the face of intense opposition from the populace and students.
