Quota reform movement: Activists declare new initiatives

Date:

The protesting students have declared the launch of a new initiative in an effort to emphasize their demand that the quota system be changed to allow for direct hiring for all government positions.

On Wednesday, there will be a funeral procession and “gayebana janaza” in honor of the departed.

At 12:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Asif Mahmud, one of the organizers of the “anti-discriminatory student movement,” a forum for students and job seekers to demonstrate, announced this program on Facebook.

They will “organize a ‘gayebana janaza’ and coffin procession for the martyrs killed in the joint attack and shooting of the police and Bangladesh Chhatra League,” the author of the post states.

On Wednesday at 2:00 pm, this program will take place at the base of the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus.

He asked everyone who was staying in Dhaka to congregate in front of the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) at the Raju sculpture location.

Asif Mahmud has simultaneously urged the striking students and job seekers to organize “gayebana janaza” and coffin procession events in all of the nation’s educational institutions.

Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, quota reform advocates staged a demonstration at the Central Shaheed Minar.

Then, at 7:30 p.m., they made an announcement to proceed to the vice-chancellor of Dhaka University’s residence.

After a time of sit-ins in front of the VC’s house, Hasnat Abdullah, one of the movement’s coordinators, declared the conclusion of the day’s activities.

He stated that following negotiations at night, the upcoming programs will be announced.

Around nine o’clock at night, the protesters began to disperse from the area following Hasnat Abdullah’s address.
