The wife of interim head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Tarique Rahman, Zubaida Rahman, has had her jail sentence suspended by the government for a year, provided she files an appeal after turning herself in for a corruption case brought by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs released a circular in this respect, which was signed by Md. Abu Sayed Molla, the deputy secretary.
The circular said the decision has been taken by the senior special judge, Dhaka, as per section 401 (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs approved Zubaida Rahman’s appeal to have her sentence suspended, and this action was taken in response.
In August of last year, a Dhaka court sentenced Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison and her husband Tarique Rahman to nine years in absentia for a corruption case that was filed on September 26, 2007, with the ACC and the Kafrul police station.
In the graft case, Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, the mother of Zubaida Rahman, was also charged with accumulating assets worth Tk 48.2 million unlawfully and withholding Tk 21.6 million from wealth declarations.
