On Thursday, at UN headquarters in New York, he was giving a speech at a high-level session of the fourth UN Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2024).
The morning’s main session, “Novel Approaches to Peace Operations and Potential Domains of Conflict,” began with the home minister as the first speaker.
In view of shifting circumstances and shifting contexts, he emphasized the necessity of deploying context-oriented and targeted specialist policing skills in peacekeeping missions.
Asaduzzaman also emphasized the importance of supporting the institutions and capabilities of security and the rule of law in the host states from the outset of peacekeeping operations. Prioritizing leave and transition strategies was what he advocated for.
The minister stated that Bangladesh is willing to help the host nation advance gender-responsive policing by providing more female peacekeepers.
In his remarks, he highlights Bangladesh’s role in bolstering UN efforts to combat false information and propaganda directed against peacekeepers. He also stresses the significance of artificial intelligence’s application in UN peacekeeping operations and the necessity of its responsible use.
The home minister met three times in private with the interior ministers of the Gambia, Atul Khare, and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN undersecretary-general for operational support, and Abdoulie Sanyang, the UN undersecretary-general for peace operations, on the fringes of UNCOPS.
During their discussions, Asaduzzaman briefed the two under-secretary generals on Bangladesh’s readiness to handle newly developing threats to peace operations as well as the country’s shifting ground realities.
They also talked about Bangladesh’s involvement in UN peacekeeping being increased.
The two undersecretary generals spoke about possible areas to further Bangladesh-UN collaborations while applauding Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peacekeeping and asking for greater funding.
The interior minister of Gambia expressed gratitude to Asaduzzaman Khan for Bangladesh’s backing of Gambia’s involvement in UN peacekeeping.
They also talked about areas where they could work together further on UN peacekeeping and the Rohingya issue.
