Protests in Bangladesh: BSF sets up “special help desks” to make it easier for Indian students to return

Date:

According to the border guarding force, “the BSF has successfully assisted in the return of 572 Indian students, 133 Nepalese students, and four Bhutanese students so far.”

In order to assist the safe return of students from the neighboring nation that has been rocked by violence, the Border Security Force (BSF) South Bengal Frontier has established “special help desks” at Integrated Check Posts (ICP) along the India-Bangladesh border.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is being consulted, according to officials, in order to ensure that students are safely evacuated, even during operations that take place at night.

The border guarding force released a statement saying, “The BSF has successfully assisted in the return of 572 Indian students, 133 Nepalese students, and four Bhutanese students so far.”

“Many Indian, Nepalese, and Bhutanese students enrolled in various Bangladeshi educational institutions are being sent back to their home countries amid this conflict. To ensure these students return safely, the BSF South Bengal Frontier has established special support desks at ICP Petrapole, LCS Gede, Ghojadanga, and Mahadipur, according to a BSF release.

“The BSF and BGB communicate often. Even during operations at night, this synchronization has guaranteed the pupils’ secure evacuation. The immigration booth at ICP Petrapole will now be open around-the-clock to further improve process efficiency, guaranteeing all students returning home a smooth and safe journey,” BSF DIG A. K. Arya stated.

Deadly riots have been plaguing Bangladesh, as students on protest are calling for the government led by Sheikh Hasina to abandon a contentious job quota system.

The demonstrators have been calling for the removal of a quota system that allots up to thirty percent of government positions to the kin of veterans who participated in Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.

According to reports from Dhaka, there have been over 100 fatalities from the riots that started a few weeks ago, however it’s still unclear how many people died exactly.

Reducing government positions for veterans’ descendants to 5%, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh ruled on July 21 that 93% of jobs should be awarded based on merit, eliminating the majority of job quotas that had triggered fatal upheaval in the nation.
