On Wednesday, the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Harjinder Singh Dhami, called for a prohibition on the release of “Emergency,” starring Kangana Ranaut. They claimed in a lengthy letter that the movie propagates a “anti-Sikh” narrative and portrays Sikhs in an inaccurate way as “separatists”
‘Emergency’, a Hindi film directed and produced by Kangana Ranaut, has been urged to be banned by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The committee referred to ‘Emergency’ as a “anti-Sikh film” in a lengthy message published from its official X account. Additionally, it requested that Kangana be charged with FIR for allegedly “character assassinating Sikhs” in the movie.
Kangana “has often deliberately made expressions that provoke the sentiments of Sikhs,” according to a note posted on social media on Wednesday by Harjinder Singh Dhami, the president of the group that represents the Sikh community. Dhami also urged that a Sikh be added to the Central Board of Film Certification and questioned its legitimacy.
His article on X said, in part, “It is crucial to have a Sikh member on the Central Film Censor Board because it is the only reason why unilateral decisions are made.” Although the Shiromani Committee has often passed resolutions in its general meeting calling for the inclusion of a Sikh representative on the Central Film Censor Board, it is unfortunate that the government is not carrying out this demand. It is imperative that this movie be banned since it is only normal for the Sikh community (sic) to get highly enraged and resentful upon the premiere of this movie.”
The committee also asserted that there is “misrepresentation” of the Sikh community in the movie’s promotional materials. “It is clear from the released excerpts of the Emergency film that it has deliberately misrepresented the character of Sikhs as separatists, which is a part of a deep conspiracy” .
Kangana portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film “Emergency.” For the past few days, the actor has been pushing the movie in the media; thus far, he has not addressed the accusations. The film tells the story of Gandhi’s reign, with special attention to the 21-month Emergency period that lasted from 1975 to 1977.
September 6 is when the movie, which also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik, will be released.
