A flash flood caused by persistent rain and the surge of water upstream has submerged at least 163 villages in various parts of the Sherpur and Mymensingh districts.
About 113 of the impacted villages are located in Sherpur’s Nalitabari, Sreebardi, and Jhenaigati upazilas, while the remaining 50 are within Mymensingh’s Dhobaura upazila.
Large tracts of farmland and fish enclosures have been washed away, leaving thousands of families stranded. Both banks of the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers are flooded as a result of erosion to the embankments.
It was discovered that by Thursday night, the water level was steadily rising, flooding the Garkanda and Nichpara regions as well as the unions of Poragaon, Nayabil, Ramchandrakura, and Baghber by night.
Vehicle traffic has been stopped on a few regional highways, such as the Nanni-Ambagan, Nanni-Modhutila Eco Park, and Ambagan-Batkuchi roads, which have submerged.
A rare spike in water levels in the Maharshi and Someshwari rivers on Friday caused at least 40 villages in Jhenaigati upazila to flood, as well as the upazila parishad buildings and the sadar market. In these places, some 5,000 individuals have become stuck.
Kashem Miya, a resident of Haluahati village in the Ranishimul union of Sreebardi upazila, reported that by noon on Friday, all of his belongings were underwater after he saw water in his yard early in the morning.
At least fifty villages in the Dhobaura upazila in Mymensingh have flooded, and there have been disruptions to mobile network services and electrical connections.
The chairman of the Maijpara union parishad, Humayun Kabir, reported that Thursday evening’s intense rains caused damage to the embankment beside the Netai river. There have been at least 20,000 stranded people.
