After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown by a large-scale insurrection led by students, there had been a four-day void before the formation of an interim administration.
At 9:20 p.m. on Thursday, Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus took an oath to serve as the interim government’s chief advisor at the Bangabhaban. Thirteen additional advisors were sworn in later.
There are a total of 17 advisors in the government. Nevertheless, because they were outside of the capital city, three advisors were unable to swear an oath.
The other advisors are: Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, Supradip Chakma, Farida Akhter, Bidhan Ranjan Roy, AFM Khalid Hasan, Noorjahan Begum, Sharmeen Murshid, Hasan Arif, Touhid Hossain, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud, and Adilur Rahman Khan.
Faruk-e-Azam, Supradip Chakma, and Bidhan Ranjan Roy will take an oath later.
Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, two of the advisors, are in charge of the Students Against Discrimination group, which organized the large-scale protest against the Sheikh Hasina administration.
The swearing-in event was led by cabinet secretary Mahbub Hossain, and the oath was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Awami League delegates were not present at the program, but leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jatiya Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), and Krishak Sramik Janata League were.
During the swearing, in addition to the political figures, prominent government officials, professionals, diplomats, and members of the Armed Forces were present.
On Monday, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India in the face of a large mass protest led by students. Bangladesh had been without an official government ever since.
Following being sworn in as the chief advisor to Bangladesh’s interim administration, Dr. Muhammad Yunus has received the warmest wishes of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He emphasized the need to ensure the safety and protection of Hindus and other minority communities in a statement on X, expressing optimism for a speedy return to normalcy in Bangladesh.
Additionally, Narendra Modi reiterated Bangladesh’s and India’s cooperation in achieving their common goals of peace, security, and development.
At 9:20 p.m., Dr. Muhammad Yunus took the oath of office as chief advisor. Subsequently, the Bangabhaban witnessed the swearing-in of thirteen additional advisors.
